We all bustle about our days in the greatest of hurries, all absorbed in our own lists and errands, musings and strains. Neglecting our relationships and ourselves, we make promises for the future, for when we get home later, for when there is more time. The blunt honest cliche truth, however, is that there is never more time. There is only now.

When I put on my shoes to leave the house, Molly looks at me expectantly, like maybe I’ll be walking her. I’ll feel guilty because I’ll realize I haven’t given her a really decent, kick-it-up-in-the-fresh-fallen-leaves, squirrel-seeking, mailbox-peeing, pant-inducing walk for a few days. Later today I’ll take you Molly, no time now, I might say. But then later comes and it’s late and it’s dark and it’s cold, and later becomes tomorrow.

The greatest, most fragile, short-lived relationships we have in life, are those with our animals. Spending a Friday night home alone with your dog doesn’t make you sub-par socially, it means you honor your relationship. Just like our human relationships, we need to make time. And if there is no time to make, no room for a little effort, then other priorities need to take a back seat.

While we bustle about our busy days, they wait at home for us. Who can say whether animals remember the promises we make and don’t keep, or whether they feel the amount of hours we are gone during the day? Molly waits at the end of the driveway for my mom or I to come home each day. She doesn’t seem to care how long we’ve been gone, she’s just glad when we come back. (Although, I swear there is a correlation between the amount of time gone and the degree of her exuberance upon our return.) That’s what is beautiful about animals: they live in the now, not the then, the when, or the future.

Forever is composed of a bunch of nows. That’s one more lesson we can take from our pets.
